Belmont College

Recommended Minimum Computer Specifications

Belmont suggests that students who plan to purchase a new computer select a model that meets the following specifications.  Computers with these specifications should serve you well for the next 3-4 years. Belmont's recommendations are the same for personal and College purchases.  Computers with lower specifications might cost less money; however, they may be less efficient than one with the recommended specifications.

  • Current Anti-Virus Software
  • To view our recommended Anti-Virus solutions, please refer to our Anti-Virus software page

Specific Software:

  • As a Belmont College student, you have access to VMWare which you can install on your personal computer.  VMWare allows you to virtually connect to the Belmont Computer software packages needed for your courses.  With the virtual desktop you will be able to access programs like MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, etc.) as well as other programs/course specific software programs.
  • Note: Because VMWare is accessed remotely you will need a standard internet connection in order to connect.  If you do not have an internet connection you can purchase Microsoft Office and Windows 7 software at a discounted price with a valid student email address at the following website.  http://www.microsoft.com/student/discounts/theultimatesteal-us/default.aspx

Microsoft Office Solutions

  • If a student is purchasing a new computer, we recommend getting Microsoft Office installed on that computer, or purchasing a computer with Microsoft Office bundled with it (not just a trial version).
  • However, if you do not have Microsoft Office, there are many free alternatives.

Windows Live SkyDrive:

  • Windows Live SkyDrive webpage allows you to create a SkyDrive account. Windows Live SkyDrive is a free online solution to Microsoft Office.  It is all browser-based (no need to install software) and you can create typical Microsoft Office documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and save them online into Microsoft’s “cloud” servers.  This will allow you to view your documents online thru SkyDrive and removes the need for a USB drive to store your documents.
  • Note: You will need to create a Windows Live ID in order to sign up for SkyDrive.

Google Documents:

  • Google Documents is also a free cloud-based program very similar to SkyDrive.  It works almost the same way and is built into Gmail as well.  If you need to download an office document to your computer to upload it for a class you can save the document as a compatible Microsoft Office document (.doc, .docx, etc.) or you can download it as an Adobe PDF file.

OpenOffice.org:

  • OpenOffice.org is a great free open solution to Microsoft Office.  You can download and install it on your computer and there are many pieces of software included such as writer (Microsoft Word), calc (Microsoft Excel), impress (Microsoft PowerPoint), and they are all compatible with Microsoft Office so you can save them as Office documents.
  • For more information on OpenOffice.org, visit their website or visit their “Why OpenOffice.org” page.
