Belmont College Home to Seismic Station

Belmont College hosting seismic station that measures ground motion.

St. Clairsville, OH (May 2, 2012) – In an effort to track the ground motion in Ohio, the Ohio Seismic Network of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) has placed several seismic stations throughout the state that are operated by volunteers and are hosted by colleges, universities, and other institutions.  Belmont College is now included as one of these locations as the College is currently housing a seismic station.

Former Senator Jason Wilson (D), Director of the Governor’s Office of Appalachia recently visited Belmont College to view the seismic station that is currently housed there.  Wilson played a large role in positioning the seismic station at the College.

The seismic station system records digital data and uses GPS (Global Positioning System) to keep correct time on the continuously recorded seismogram. The station's computer is connected to the Internet for rapid data transfer. Belmont College is permitted to use the seismic station for educational purposes and integrate the seismic data into coursework and/or curriculum.

According to Ohio.gov, the seismometer which is the instrument that detects Earth motions and other seismic components were purchased by the Division of Geological Survey with funds provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), through the Ohio Emergency Management Agency, as part of the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program. The computers and Internet connection are provided by Belmont College.

Moreover, Ohio.gov states that the Ohio Seismic Network, Ohio’s earthquake monitoring network, provides a new dimension of understanding about the pulse of the Earth beneath Ohio. Although the seismic network cannot predict earthquakes or provide an alert prior to an event, it provides insight into earthquake risk in the state so that intelligent decisions about building and facility design and construction, insurance coverage, and other planning decisions can be made by individuals, business and industry, and governmental agencies.
