Fourth Annual OVAC Kickoff Weekend – Match-Ups and Sites Announced

WHEELING, WV — To celebrate the official start of the 2013 high school football season in the Ohio Valley the 4th Annual “McDonald’s OVAC Kickoff Weekend presented by WTOV9” will take place on Thursday, August 29, and Friday, August 30.

One of the highlights for this year will be the addition of a new site, as two of the games on Thursday will be played at Indian Creek High School’s Kettlewell Memorial Stadium in Wintersville, Ohio. Wheeling Island Stadium will again host the other set of games.

The double-header at the Wheeling Island Stadium will lead with Cameron High School versus Bishop Donahue High School, kicking off at 5:00pm. Wheeling Central will take on Harrison Central at 7:30 pm. This game will feature two playoff teams from 2012 that will both be coming into the season with high expectations.

Thursday’s games at Kettlewell Memorial Stadium will open at 5:30pm with Indian Creek High School taking on Weir High. Immediately following, game two will feature OVAC Class 1A match-up of Weirton Madonna High School and Beallsville High School.

Both teams return a lot of talent and could potentially end their seasons back on the Island at the Super Six Championships.

Wheeling based Scholastic Sports Marketing (SSM) is again partnering with WTOV9 to bring this event to the Ohio Valley. The event will serve as a fundraiser for the participating schools, the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference (OVAC) and the Ronald McDonald House.

“We’re confident that this year’s schedule will be a lot of fun for football fans in the Ohio Valley,” explained Tim McCoy WTOV’s Vice President & General Manager. “We are extremely proud to showcase 10 great high school football programs and the student-athletes who excel not only on the gridiron but in the classroom too!”

Thursday’s games will all be broadcast tape-delayed on WTOV9. WKKX 1600 AM will carry the games on the radio and will audio stream on The participating schools will sell tickets. Tickets for Saturday’s double-headers are $10 and tickets for Friday’s game in Wheeling is $7. The fan enhancement plans will be released in the coming weeks.

“What a better way to celebrate the official start of the football season! The crowds and fan enthusiasm have exceeded our expectations these first three years. It will be exciting to see how things go at our new Indian Creek site and having both Weirton schools on that same ticket. Our primary objectives remain the same, and that’s to raise money for the OVAC and member schools, the Ronald McDonald House and provide a positive experience for the youth of our community,” said James Companion of Scholastic Sports Marketing.

Besides McDonald’s as the title sponsor, WTOV9 as the presenting sponsor, Wheeling Hospital, Shirts N’ More, Premier Bank & Trust, Paree Insurance Centers, West Liberty University, Belmont College and the US Army are also on board as official sponsors.
