St. Clairsville, OH (December 13, 2013) – Belmont College, in conjunction with College Tech Prep, hosted a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Expo for Belmont County 8th grade students on Friday, December 13. The expo was held from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Horizon Hall at the Main Campus in St. Clairsville. Students from Bellaire, Martins Ferry, St. Clairsville, and Union Local schools attended.
According to Tech Prep Coordinator Annmarie O’Grady, the purpose of the STEM Expo is to increase student awareness of a variety of STEM careers. “Knowledge and skills from the STEM fields are crucial to virtually every endeavor in individual and community life,” she said. “All young Americans should be educated to be STEM capable no matter where they live, what educational path they pursue or in which field they choose to work. STEM jobs are the jobs of the future, as they are essential for developing our technological innovation and global competitiveness.”
The STEM Expo highlighted STEM careers with displays by current Belmont College students, local business and industry professionals, and the Belmont Career Center. There were also information sessions held by Belmont College faculty regarding math and electronic media.
An interactive science demonstration by Darryl Baynes of MAEA Science Programs was held for the students as well as appearances by members of the Wheeling Nailers Hockey Team.
