Belmont College and The University of Akron Partner to Offer Additional Degree Opportunities
UA Associate, Bachelor Degrees Will Be Offered on Belmont Campus to Meet Demand of Mappers, Surveyors
ST. CLAIRSVILLE, OH (March 1, 2018) – A growing demand for mappers and surveyors from the Ohio Valley’s energy industry has led to a new partnership between Belmont College and The University of Akron (UA). The joint effort means students can earn a bachelor’s degree in surveying and mapping starting this fall without ever leaving the St. Clairsville campus. Students will obtain the degree exclusively at Belmont College through UA’s College of Applied Science and Technology.
Students attending Belmont College can currently take select courses from a variety of areas related to land surveying to receive an associate of arts degree. Now, by completing six University of Akron bridge classes onsite at Belmont College, they can also earn an Associate of Applied Science in Land Surveying. Completion of those degrees will allow students to directly enroll into UA’s Bachelor of Science in Surveying and Mapping program. The bridge courses and bachelor of science classes will be taught onsite at Belmont College.
“This is a great opportunity to become prepared for a good career in a growing field,” said Dr. Elizabeth Kennedy, Dean of UA’s College of Applied Science and Technology. “We are glad to join Belmont College to help make sure Ohio Valley students become prepared for these future jobs, and have this excellent education option available to them in their own backyard.”
Surveyors and mappers in the Ohio Valley’s energy industry perform surveys of land boundaries for property deeds and parcel descriptions. They also develop layouts related to pipeline construction. Mappers
occasionally use drones to help determine topography of land for energy facilities and pipeline transportation.
“We are excited to work with The University of Akron to create the Land Surveying seamless pathway to a Bachelor’s Degree,” said Dr. Rebecca Kurtz, Vice President of Academic Affairs & Student Engagement at Belmont College. “Students will not have to leave the area to complete these courses and the jobs outlook for this pathway is solid. This transfer and articulation agreement will decrease the time-to-degree, and save the costs of travel, room and board, and repeating courses.”
