Belmont College Holds Heritage Tree and Emeritus Ceremony

St. Clairsville, OH (November 8, 2017) — In recognition of their dedication and commitment to Belmont College, three individuals were awarded high honors at the October 26 Honors Reception held at the Belmont Hills Country Club.

 

“Our honorees were chosen in acknowledgement of their unique contributions and long history with Belmont College,” said Mrs. Elizabeth Gates, Board of Trustees Chairperson. “They have all served in different capacities by devoting their time and excellent work to the college and our students.”

The Heritage Tree Award is presented to individuals who have helped to shape Belmont College through their leadership efforts and steadfast dedication. Receiving this distinguished award for devotion to the college was Mrs. Sue White and the Honorable Harry White of St. Clairsville, Ohio, as well as the late Marcia Bedway of Cadiz, Ohio.

 

“As members of our local community and friends of Belmont College, our honorees have dedicated their resources in support of our students, programs and initiatives,” said Matt Kendall, Vice President of Human Resources & Sustainability.

 

A symbolic tree with gold leaves adorns a prominent spot in the college to showcase the names of the current honorees and those who previously received the distinction. Inductee’s names are etched on the tree as a permanent reminder of their individual commitment to the creation, growth and development of Belmont College’s heritage.

 

Additionally, the notable designation of Emeritus was bestowed upon Mrs. Sue White, retired Director of Nursing and the late Ms. Marcia Bedway, former Board of Trustees member and former Foundation Board Vice Chairperson.

The Emeritus designation is an honorary title given to retired faculty, staff and board members in recognition of admirable service to the college and its students.

 

White received the title Director Emeritus for her many years of service and dedication to Belmont College. For more than two decades, White enriched the lives of countless nursing students who have passed through Belmont College’s doors. She joined the Belmont College faculty in 1988 as an adjunct faculty member. She later became an Instructor of Nursing, and over the years was promoted to Assistant Professor of Nursing and Associate Professor of Nursing. In 2008, White was promoted to Assistant Director of Nursing and became a Certified Nurse Educator in March 2012, she then was named the Director of Nursing title in 2015.

 

She served as Chair of the Nursing program from 2008 through 2017 and helped to oversee the building of the college’s new Health Sciences Center. This state-of-the-art building, which opened for classes in August 2015, houses all of Belmont College’s health sciences classrooms including nursing, biology, anatomy, and chemistry labs.

 

White has served on the Belmont College Foundation Board since September 2008.

 

Moreover, the late Marcia Bedway was honored with the title Trustee Emeritus. Bedway served on the Belmont College Board of Trustees and Foundation Board, most recently as Vice Chairperson, for nearly two decades.

 

In presenting Marcia Bedway’s award to her family, Mrs. Elizabeth Gates, Board of Trustees Chairperson said, “It is a great privilege to honor the late Ms. Marcia Bedway with a leaf on the Heritage Tree and to bestow upon her the title of Trustee Emeritus. Marcia played an integral part in the story of Belmont College. Her love of the college was evident to all those who knew her and she was known by all in the Belmont College Community to be generous with her time, dedication and support of the college.”

 

She continued, “Marcia was a remarkable and genuinely kind person who displayed true dedication to Belmont College. She is greatly missed.”

 

“The Heritage Tree and Emeritus honorees deserve high recognition for their devotion to our institution and our students,” said President Dr. Paul Gasparro. “They are a representation of the dedication that they have given to our students over the years. It is an honor to have had these individuals as a part of Belmont College, and recognize them for the influence they have had on generations of our students.”

 

A reception was held following the ceremony to celebrate the inductees.
