Belmont College Announces Commencement Ceremony

Judge Edmund A. Sargus, Jr., Chief Judge for the Southern District of Ohio, will deliver the keynote address at Belmont College’s 2015 commencement ceremony.

St. Clairsville, OH (April 29, 2015) — Belmont College will honor 2015 graduates during a commencement ceremony to be held on Thursday, May 7; commencement services will take place at the Ohio University Eastern Campus Health and Physical Education Center in St. Clarsville, Ohio at 7:00 p.m.  Judge Edmund A. Sargus, Jr. will deliver the keynote address to the graduates.

 

Judge Sargus currently serves on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. He was nominated to the bench by President Clinton and confirmed by the United States Senate on July 22, 1996. He is one of four District Court Judges seated in Columbus, together with three judges on senior status. On January 1, 2015, he became Chief Judge for the Southern District of Ohio.

 

In 1975, Sargus graduated with an honors degree in American History from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. In 1978, he graduated from the Case Western Reserve School of Law, where he was Vice President of the Student Bar Association.

 

Sargus was also a member of the St. Clairsville City Council from 1987 to 1991, Solicitor of Powhatan Point, Ohio from 1978 to 1993, and Law Director for the City of Bellaire from 1990 to 1993. He currently serves as a trustee of the Belmont College Foundation Board. Sargus also serves on the Boards of Directors for the House of Hope, a residential drug treatment program, the Ohio Lawyers Assistance Program, which provides help to lawyers struggling with addiction issues, and the Advisory Board of Star House, a facility operated by The Ohio State University for homeless youth. He is married to Judge Jennifer Sargus.
